Newspaper photo of Pace’s Team
Teaching – the caption reads “BACK-TO-BACK, two Pace team
teachers, conduct different aspects of the same class simultaneously”
Now, I have to admit I don’t
remember the walls being open when we were in our smaller groups – I
believe they ended up being pulled shut.
This would be Brother Michael’s English class. |

Going
to the Prom with your cousin – how lame is that?
Mind you, he was a good sport about it (now that I think about
it, my cousins attended proms till they were about 29 – there was
always some poor girl looking for a date).
My mother made my dress the day of the Prom (what, you mean they
come already made from the store?) and it didn’t fit (how can you make
a dress for someone and not have it fit? - well, it was ready by the time we had to leave).
What do I remember about Prom night?
The boat ride – that was the best sleep I’d had in a long
time – I mean, everyone else was necking and I was with my cousin, so
there was just so much one could do in the dark with one’s
cousin….Check out the hair – does anyone remember banana curls? Hair pieces? If
this photo had scanned better you’d be able to notice the Harvest Gold
carpet and Avocado Green Sofa – anyone remember those fabulous 70’s
decorating colors? You’ll
notice too the strategically placed end table and “accent chair”
that did a pretty good job of catching my Dad’s knee
or toe every morning as he walked into the living room – that’s how
we woke up each morning – who needed an alarm clock? – the cursing
would wake us up but we couldn’t come out of our rooms until we had
our giggling under control and could express the right amount of concern
for the injured limb (the ten little piggies and two knees really did
suffer). |

Pre-Calculus
– L to R, Ana Garcia, Betty Ortega, Norma Hernandez, Anna Alvarez and
Hilda Gonzalez (please note the UN-air-conditioned classroom – if that
wasn’t child torture I don’t know what was, particularly as the end
of the school year approached) – judging by the sweaters, this must
have been “winter”. |
|
The rest of the class – Judy Killian, Helen
Garcia, Susan Kelly, Dianne Thornton way in the back, and Ana Garcia
again. Now I can tell a
secret (30 years is past the statute of limitations, isn’t it?) – I
convinced Hilda to take Pre-Calculus with me (I don’t know what
argument I used but it worked) – so it was my job to make sure she
passed, so we used to exchange tests and I’d do the parts of her test
that she couldn’t do. This
worked fine for most tests till Hilda forgot and put her name on her
test and then we switched papers – when the teacher wandered around
the room looking at how everyone was doing I sweated with my hand over
the name hoping we wouldn’t get caught.
Whew! Now I’ve got that off my chest – confession is good for
the soul. I tried cheating
a few other times, with little success.
In sophomore year we had these paperback social studies books (I
hated history and social studies), and I read as little as I could get
away with in these books – during a test, as I was pretty far back
from the teacher, I pulled one of the books out of
my desk to look up an answer and dropped the book on the floor – whap!
– Didn’t I have a look of pure innocence looking down at that bad
book that slipped out of my desk and disturbed everyone. Senior year History finals, I spent so much time working on a
micro-mini crib sheet that I actually memorized all the facts and
didn’t need to use it. And
I remember that the class before us had somehow spirited out the answers
(A D C B B A etc) and everyone was busy memorizing the answers, using
various mnemonics – I never could remember the letters – good thing
I learned what I needed accidentally.
I remember someone wrote the answers down on their hand –
someone else had them on their shoe. And I’m still mad at Mr. Sutla for embarrassing me in front
of the whole class when we had to read reports on special projects –
some things you just never forget. |
|
Sorry the quality of these photos is so bad, but
you’ll have to trust me when I say the “babe” with the blonde
pageboy next to Bobby Cahill is Tico Gimbel.
But someone else is going to have to explain the why, because I
sure can’t – I just know I have the photo |

The day after losing the State
semi-final baseball game at Avon Park, a totally bummed out Brother
Stephen is comforted by a bevy of sympathetic ladies – Miriam,
Susanna, Lania, Alina, Helen and Ilsa. |

Home Economics class – did anyone
actually wear the clothes (and I use the term loosely) that we made in
class? One thing I remember
about Home Ec is the girls being bored one day and getting Mrs Lyden to
talk about “married” life – she didn’t need a lot of
encouragement to chat, and no one stopped her as it was at least more
interesting than class. The
discussion got pretty frank – this prompted her to go to the girl’s
principal and suggest we needed a proper talking-to by a married woman
who could explain “things” to us girls.
So, we ended up having a special session with Mrs Lyden answering
an amazing collection of questions – I’m sure Mr Lyden’s ears must
have been burning. |

Hat day – Hilda, Vivian,
Margie, Linda, Beverly
Which reminds me of a day in the
cafeteria when we were juniors (sophs?) and the school principal was not
Father Hennessy but the one who smoked cigars that you smell a mile
away. A certain female
student, who happens to be pictured above, was standing but leaning over
a table resting on her elbows on the table, chatting away with friends
when Father notHennessy walked up behind her and bellowed, “Young
lady, do you have any idea what that looks like from here?!”
I’m sorry – it still cracks me up when I think about it.
Which
leads me to another thing – where did the boys get off complaining
about having to wear “uniforms” – look at these things we wore and
tell me who had the right to complain? No amount of tucking, tightening or shortening could make
these things look any better – though Lord knows the girls tried –
and you couldn’t afford to have too many of these things, so they got
washed and worn over and over – by senior year they were pretty much
falling apart |

More Hat day - Lori, Margie, Hilda, Betty,
